Consultants’ Confidence, not Social Networking, is Key to Success

by Jennifer Beever

“Allow yourself to be successful.” According to Alan Weiss, the key to consulting success is self-confidence. Oh, and having confidence in the fact that the economy is most definitely undergoing a recovery.

Weiss spoke to 200 consultants today at the opening keynote lunch for Confab 2009, the Institute of Management Consultants conference for consultants by consultants in Reno, Nevada. In addition to his advice about having confidence, Weiss added good news. Because of a lack of trust among corporate executives for big consulting firms, there is more opportunity for the small and mid-size consulting firms and independent consultants.

Following the good news, Weiss went on to deliver the bad news. If consultants are expecting to reach corporate contacts through social networking, including LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook, they’re wasting their time. He listed ten key things consultants need to do to thrive in any economy. These are:

  1. Have focus and discipline
  2. Identify key markets
  3. Leverage relationships
  4. Maintain a clean database
  5. Develop a brand
  6. Use a sales process
  7. Work with great people
  8. Act! Do something!
  9. Have a great support system
  10. Have belief and faith in what you do

Weiss added some final words, “If you’re not failing, you’re not trying.”
