Session Description

Has a client ever asked you to do something you weren’t 100% comfortable doing?  Have you even noticed something a client company was doing (while not directly associated with your project) that might — or might not — be ethically questionable?  Has a client ever asked not to take on a project with another company even though the client agrees there’s no conflict of interest?  This session will explore three such issues, presenting all points of view, and then open the discussion up to the attendees to weigh in.

This will be a highly charged and highly interactive session with plenty of opportunity for the attendees to weigh in on the best way to handle ethical problems brought forth in three case studies.  As you participate in this session you will be amazed at the differing viewpoints expressed and at the impact of those viewpoints on your own understanding and method of dealing with the issue.

This session counts as two points toward IMC USA Certification Renewal.

Session Objective / Value

Some ethical issues are easy, direct violations of the IMC Code of Ethics that anyone can read the Code and know how they should act.  Others are much harder to handle.  Case materials will be distributed to attendees prior to Confab or in their registration packets.  A moderator will summarize the case and two CMCs will present alternative analyses and courses of action, followed by opening the floor to general discussion.  The value of this session is it allows attendees to consider three situations actually faced by IMC members, to consider all the possible ways of handling them and, most important, to think about how they can develop their own ethical framework for handling similar situations when faced with them in their own consulting practices.
